Dom et Jean Paul RUIZ

Biography

Dom and Jean Paul Ruiz have worked together for 40 years on the theme of landscape. They seek, through different media (installations, photography, video, painting, artist’s books, drawings and prints), to sublimate nature and landscapes. It is a way for them to pay homage to the heritage, to the flora, to the ethnic diversity of the territories.

D JP Ruiz live in the landscape. They reflect on the relationships between human beings, their activities and their environment.
Plastic artists, D JP Ruiz create and propose a work gravitating around the notions of perception of the territory that they call “Geotopoet(h)ique”.

The reading of the landscape, at a given moment of space and time, changes in nature according to the person who looks at it. Depending on the point of view adopted, we speak of individual perceptions or collective perceptions, of nature or society, of aesthetic contemplation or territorial control, of psychology or politics.
Aware of these different points of view, they examine the landscape in order to identify its attributes. Then they use the collected elements as a “material” to recreate a unitary image.

This is the definition of “Geotopoet(h)ique”. Under this theme, which has become the central axis of their artistic approach, a panel of visual proposals is revealed, including photography, video, painting, sculpture…

“Passé the first surprise effect, I felt a kind of fascination rather close to the persistence phénomène rétinienne.”Yannick Miloux, November 2017.

Universe

Dom and Jean Paul Ruiz propose to share the multiplicity of their glances on the landscape! After having worked on “materials” such as the tree in its material, economic and cultural extension, after having used the vegetable garden and its production in order to experiment its functioning, going so far as to make it the material of painting, they experiment the landscape territory as a whole. Their work on landscape was born from reflections during their numerous travels in France and abroad, the landscape is, for them, the result of the trace of man.
Man transforms the landscape!
Their art builds a “landscape” of ecology by making visible and sensitive i.e. by presenting and not by representing what nature alone does not show.

Printmaking

The technique used on these engravings is that of linocut on paper. Each work is the result of a long work aimed at giving a very particular intensity and depth to the landscape presented.

This technique also gives the viewer real motivation to scrutinize the multiple colorful details enclaved in this black mesh that seems, in the first place, to block the vision.

Photography

Dom and Jean Paul wish, through their clichés, to sublimate landscapes by highlighting nature and its diversity.
They use this medium to enhance the existing and thus arouse in the viewer a feeling of powerlessness in the face of the intensity of our environment.

Painting

Through the representation of the landscape, the dew, the vegetable garden or pollution, Jean Paul seeks to highlight the relationship between man and his environment and the consequences of life.

Painting then offers a vast panel of possible representation that the artist explores.
